Spalted River Birch Bowl

 
Spalted river birch. Approximately 11-3/4″ diameter, 3-1/4″ high. Finished with pure linseed oil and beeswax. This is the second piece from a log I cracked open a couple months back. I salvaged several logs from some yard trees which were removed 6-7 years ago and just let them sit to see what kind of spalting would brew up. I have not been disappointed. For those that are unfamiliar with the term “spalting”, it refers to the crazy black lines visible throughout this piece. It is the result of fungal growth which can occur in slow drying wood. The fungus dies off after the substrate moisture content drops below around 20%. This piece was around 15% moisture content when I cut into it. It is currently at my areas equilibrium moisture content for fully air dried lumber which is about 12-13%. FREE SHIPPING IN CONTINENTAL USA
