Vase in southern live oak (quercus virginiana). Approximately 7-1/4″ tall with a 3″ diameter at the base. This piece has been lightly ammonia fumed to darken the browns and accentuate the lighter sections which got bleached out during the drying process. It has a number of bug holes in the lighter sections, but the former residents are long gone. The finish consists of 5 coats of high gloss waterborne lacquer to add depth and finished with one coat of satin to dumb down the shine and highlight grain. The interior is fairly well sealed, although I wouldn’t recommend filling it with water. It would be ideal for displaying dried flowers, drying fresh cut flowers, or as a stand alone piece. It was locally harvested from a tree which was pruned in Awendaw, SC. Southern live oak is one of the hardest and densest North American hardwoods.
