This lidded bowl in southern live oak measure approximately 5-1/8″ diameter by 3-3/8″ overall height. I darkened this wood using an ammonia fuming process which brings out the tannins in the wood giving it that gorgeous chocolate brown with some golden highlights. Ammonia fuming oak was popularized during the American arts and craft movement in the early part of the previous century. Live oak responds particularly well to this technique. This piece also shows some spalting (black outlined whitish blotches) on both end grain faces.
