This maple wood box measures approximately 5-1/4″ tall by 2-3/4″ in diameter and features extensive spalting. The spalting (variegation, black lines, etc) is the result of a fungal growth that occurs when wood is dried slowly and the moisture content remains high. The growth dies off after the drops below about a 20% moisture content. This piece is 11-12% moisture content which is equilibrium moisture content for air dried wood here in the low country. The inner sleeve on this piece is some cherry i had laying around in order to maintain as much grain continuity as possible on the exterior.
